A Goldfields pastor and traditional land owner who fired a gun into the air at a West Australian mine during a confrontation with staff has been fined US$913 ($1200).

Wongatha Wonganarra elder Geoffrey Stokes was calling for work to stop at the mine, near the Mount Margaret Community, because he feared sacred sites were at risk.

Stokes recently went on trial in Kalgoorlie over the October 2014 dispute, and was on Monday found guilty of discharging a firearm to cause fear.

He was fined but was granted a spent conviction.
