Former European Commission president José Manuel Barroso will be the keynote speaker at the annual Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie in August.

Organisers of the annual mining industry gabfest announced this morning that Mr Barroso would speak on the first day of the three-day conference on Monday, August 6.

As EC president between 2004 and 2014, Mr Barroso presided over the greatest growth of European Union member countries in history and was a key figure in co-ordinating the response to the European sovereign debt crisis.

The former Prime Minister of Portugal was appointed chairman of Goldman Sachs International in July 2016.

The keynote presentation at Diggers and Dealers is focused on delivering a global perspective of events that impact international economic activity.

Diggers and Dealers chairman Nick Giorgetta said Mr Barroso would be a highlight of the 2018 program.

“The restructure of the European Union because of Brexit is one of the more challenging economic issues affecting the international community,” he said.

“Mr Barroso is uniquely qualified to deliver an educated overview of the economic implications that will come from this momentous change, both for Europe and the global community.”

Conference organisers are in the process of finalising the line-up of speakers for the event with applications set to close on Friday.
