Atlas Iron is adding manganese to its product mix with another deal that takes advantage of its Utah Point export facilities in Port Hedland.

Over the next four months, the iron ore producer will buy 100,000 tonnes of manganese mined near Meekatharra by the privately-owned Horseshoe Manganese and ship it to export markets using existing chartered iron ore carriers.

Atlas said its logistics chain was able to handle the manganese lump at a low cost and without affecting its current iron ore or scheduled lithium shipments.

The deal with Horseshoe Manganese is similar to that recently negotiated with emerging lithium producer Pilbara Minerals.

Under that arrangement, Atlas is buying 1.5 million tonnes of raw lithium ore from Pilbara’s Pilgangoora project, south of Port Hedland, and on-selling it to Sinosteel.
