A group of brave folk kissed their hair goodbye yesterday to raise $12,000 for the World’s Greatest Shave.

Four Evolution Mining Mungari employees braved the shave for the annual Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser.

Truck Driver Sonya Trader, Mine Geologist Greg Wynne, Senior Engineer Rob Grimm and Development and Technology Services Manager Matt Varvari raised about $9000 in five weeks, with Evolution Mining donating $3000, taking the total to $12,000.

There were plenty of laughs as the locks fell off but for many, the disease had touched their lives in some way.

Ms Trader was the only female participant and had her dreadlocks shaved off in memory of her grandfather, who died of leukaemia.

“I committed to it before thinking about it, but as the money started piling up in the account, I was filled with regrets and really nervous in the lead-up,” she said.

“I never got to meet my grandfather because he died when my dad was really young. It was very traumatic for dad so that’s why I decided to do the shave ... it was an easy way for me to raise some money.”

Mr Grimm shaved his beard and hair and said he got onboard with the fundraiser to support his colleagues and give back to those in his life who had lived with the cancer.

“I had a mate whose daughter got leukaemia about five years ago — she got through it and is doing really well but it’s always hard seeing kids being that sick so I think it’s important to show support for people who go through those tough times,” he said.

Mr Wynne organised the shave.

“I’ve got three young kids and I just thought leukaemia is one of those cancers that can affect children more than adults so it was easy to fundraise for those kids who suffer,” he said.

Mr Varvari signed up the day before the big shave and vowed to lose his beard, but halfway through his shave made a brave call for an extra $1000 donation from the crowd to lose all his hair.

All funds go to the foundation to support research and people living with leukaemia.
