Northern Star, Roy Hill and uber prospector Mark Creasy were among those honoured on the final night of the annual Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie.

Presented at the annual WesTrac Gala Dinner, Northern Star won the Dealer Award for its US$260 (383.81) million acquisition of the Pogo gold mine in Alaska from Sumitomo in September last year.

The project had a 4.1 million ounce resource, which judges noted represented a sale price of just US$63 ($93) an ounce.

Surrounded by 1300 delegates and guests, Northern Star Executive Chairman Bill Beament accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Roy Hill won the Digger Award for its construction and ramp-up of a $10 billion iron ore project in the Pilbara.

The company built 344km of heavy haul railway, two berthing facilities at Port Hedland and an open cut mine in just five years.

It reached its 55 million tonne nameplate capacity in FY19 after shipping its first ore in December 2015.

Roy Hill Chief Executive Barry Fitzgerald and Director Professor Ian Plimer accepted the award on behalf of the company.

WA mining veteran Mark Creasy won the GJ Stokes Memorial Award for his “significant and lasting contribution to the industry”.

The well-known prospector has been involved in some of the WA’s most significant mineral discoveries, including the Bronzewing and Jundee gold mines and more recently the Nova nickel mine and the Silver Knight nickel discovery in the Fraser Range.

After 55 years in the industry, he remains one of the biggest holders of exploration ground in WA.

The award for emerging miner of the year went to Bellevue Gold, which is riding a wave of confidence after posting first assays from a new discovery at its namesake flagship operation 30km north of Leinster.

Fourth-year mining engineering student from the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, Samuel La Macchia, won the Ray Finlayson Medal for Leadership and Academic Excellence.

The Media Award went to veteran resources reporter Barry Fitzgerald, who works for online offerings StockHead and Mining News.
