Perth-based company Mondium has been awarded a mine contract valued at approximately $400 million by Rio Tinto.

Mondium will design and construct the Western Turner Syncline Phase 2 mine, which is part of Rio Tinto’s Greater Tom Price operations in the Pilbara.

Under the contract, Mondium will undertake works to aspects including the process plant, overland conveyor and non-process infrastructure.

Rio Tinto announced in a media statement it will be working with Mondium to ensure local and Indigenous employment opportunities will be provided.

“We’re committed to supporting WA businesses, buying locally and supporting our communities through the creation of jobs,” Rio Tinto Iron Ore Chief Executive Officer Chris Salisbury said.

“We’re pleased to award this contract to Mondium who share those values.

“We’re continuing to invest in Western Australia and have a number of development projects in the pipeline that will continue to provide opportunities for local companies.”

The work will start in the first quarter of this year and is expected to be completed in 2021.
