Decmil Group Executive General Manager Construction and Engineering Jon Holmes



How do you like to start your working day?

A typical day for me will begin with a call to our Brisbane office on my drive in to work. Although we have our origins and our head office in Western Australia, these days Decmil is a truly national business with an increasing volume of our projects based on the east coast and even overseas, particularly Papua New Guinea, so I take advantage of the time zone differences to catch up with colleagues on the other side of the country before I even get to the office. This enables me to get a handle on the day ahead before the working day officially begins.


What piece of technology couldn’t you live without?

Easy – my iPad, without question. It enables me to be on the pulse of business no matter where I am, as well as keep up with how my favourite sports team are faring, particularly (AFL team) the Fremantle Dockers, who Decmil has been involved with for several years now as a supporter.


Who would you most like to share a working lunch with?

People working in a similar environment, such as fellow general managers and chief executive officers in adjacent sectors to find out their opinions on where the market is heading. There’s no doubt we are in challenging times and it is always good to seek out the perspective of other people to see how they are working through it and the approach they are taking.


What is your greatest professional achievement to date?

I’d say it is bringing together great teams of outstanding people to work on great projects. As a leader within a business like this, the most rewarding thing is to help others achieve their potential as we deliver on major projects for our clients.


What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Two pieces of advice stick in my mind. Firstly: deal with the here and now, and secondly: seek to be relevant inside and outside of work.


What do you think about on the way home from work?

Work! Car time is a perfect time to catch up on phone calls and messages from the day (on hands- free, of course).


What is your favourite aspect of your job?

In a word, variety. It involves so many dimensions: spending time getting around to visit our projects; understanding the jobs we are undertaking (many of which are in remote areas with their own logistical challenges); ensuring the Decmil team remains committed to delivering great outcomes that exceed our clients’ expectations; and ultimately, seeing the success that we can achieve as a business.


Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

I hope to continue to be working within the construction and engineering sector in a senior role, as it offers such variety and depth of challenges. I’m a firm believer that this industry has exciting times ahead and I want to be a part of that. We are seeing such diversification and growth within the sector in Australia, so the opportunities are virtually limitless.


What is the best part of your daily working routine?

Engaging with clients and hearing about the shared success we have achieved together. No matter what we are working on, this remains a ‘people business’ and it is only by working together collaboratively that we can achieve our best.


How would your colleagues describe you?

This is a hard one, as it is not something I spend a lot of time thinking about. That being said, I would hope they might describe me as driven, energetic, innovative, solutions-focused, knowledgeable and experienced.


How would you describe the balance between your working and personal life?

It is always a challenge. How successful I am in achieving the right balance varies quite a lot depending on my current workload. However, I am making a conscientious effort to do so. A perfect New Year’s resolution for 2015, perhaps?


Jon Holmes has been the Executive Manager of Construction and Engineering for the Decmil Group since July 2013.

Holding a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Economics, Mr Holmes has a passion for solving client problems, meeting clients’ needs and adapting to changing market conditions.

A highly experienced construction industry executive, Mr Holmes has contributed to the success of major construction and infrastructure projects in the resources and government sectors for more than 19 years and previously held senior roles at John Holland and Golding Contractors.
